The owners of this 1938
central city home wanted to create a new bedroom suite for their
daughter. They felt it was essential to preserve their home’s cottage
charm and modest scale while adding the new space.
A new stair was cut into the existing hallway, leading to an upstairs
landing with display shelving. In order to create space in the attic for
the new rooms, the original roofline was extended upward. A new eyebrow
window was added to the roof, enhancing the charm of the cottage from
the exterior and providing daylight into the room. The client also
wanted to renovate the kitchen. A new island was built, all cabinets
were replaced, and new tile was found to match the existing.
The result of the addition and renovation is a spacious light-filled
home, seamlessly integrated with the original cottage styling of the
era. The homeowners have added more room for entertaining and most
importantly, there is a new, private bedroom suite with dressing area
and bath for their daughter.
