The
owners of this 1939 colonial had a number of desires for their home.
They wanted a mudroom, an informal eating area, and above all, a new,
larger kitchen. They also wanted a minimal footprint that would not
encroach on their backyard. The solution was to create the mudroom
within the existing space used by a landing and closet. The kitchen was
expanded and the informal dining area created by bumping the rear
exterior wall of the home out four feet. The addition breaks down the
massing of the rear exterior, giving it a more human scale, while the
two new covered entries add beauty and convenience.
