In the updating of this
1980’s home, the client wanted to also introduce several new and
different materials throughout the home that would complement the
existing surroundings and her own personal taste. Since a great deal of
steel was used in the first floor spaces, a few other materials were
needed to soften the ambience a bit. Maple was chosen for the kitchen
cabinets and some stair railing, while complimentary bamboo was used for
the stair treads and throughout the home. The kitchen bar-top, fireplace
surround, and hearth were all made of cast concrete. The client is
eclectically artistic, so the demand for a clean, modernist design
approach was in order. Existing pipe columns were disguised with
rectangular stainless steel jackets. Contrasting curves in a bamboo
staircase and the kitchen balanced the home’s internal geometry.
