This detached structure
will function as the owner's temporary living quarters while the main
house is under construction. Minimal disruption to the existing coastal
habitat was of paramount importance to the owner, and extensive measures
were taken to insure compliance with these requirements. Due to site
access constraints, steel pipe pilings were used in lieu of conventional
concrete and elliptical glulam beams were assembled on site. Full-scale
templates were created for beams, windows and doors for exact
conformance to fourteen radius control points. Built with the precision
of a finely crafted wooden ship, the project exemplifies indigenous
architecture, workmanship, and materials suitable to withstand the harsh
coastal environment.
