This project was the
result of a fire in a third floor screen porch caused by a propane gas
grill. (Someone forgot to tell them that they didn’t need to use that
charcoal lighter). There was extensive damage to the roof, third floor,
exterior decks, and the second floor. To access the contaminated
ductwork, the ceilings on the first floor had to be removed. 95% of the
roof trusses had to be replaced, the third floor had to be gutted and
the rear wall replaced.
Challenges included working at a height of 40 feet with strong ocean
winds. Until the roof trusses could be fabricated, the roof tarps had to
be secured and checked every day. The house backed onto a tidal marsh
into which no debris could blow.
When it was time to remove the roof, it
was cut into sections and lifted off with a crane. In two days, the old
roof was removed and the new one framed in.
The results of the project were excellent. The work proceeded at a good
pace, and because of the extent of the reconstruction, the customer was
able to change several parts of the existing house that didn’t work for
them before.
