Renovations had the privilege of remodeling a mid-century kitchen
designed by architect Winthrop Faulkner, who was well known for his
contemporary, residential architecture in Northwest Washington D.C. Our
challenge was to update the original kitchen to meet the needs of a
young family while adhering to the integrity of Faulkner’s original
design. We envisioned a kitchen that blurred the lines between the
inside living space and the outside garden; a kitchen that was
functional for weekday activities as well as weekend entertainment. We
began the project by eliminating the dumb waiter and relocating the
laundry room which provided space for a banquette and walk-in pantry.
Next, we added custom, white cabinetry, a large, waterfall-edged island
with a primary sink, and a secondary sink on the window counter
tightening the work triangle and allowing kitchen traffic to function
undisturbed. The result was a clean-lined, light-filled kitchen that
blended beauty with functionality that even Faulkner, himself, would
have approved.
