This project consisted of
remodeling a bathroom to accommodate the needs of a woman in a
wheelchair, her husband, and caregiver. The home was custom built for
them in 1968, before the wife was diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis.
With the input of all concerned, it was determined that while the
universal design recommendation of a roll-in shower would be followed,
there would be no built-in shower seat, as a moveable seat better suited
the needs of all involved. Another departure consisted of the way grab
bars are placed in the toilet area, as they needed to be placed in a way
that allowed the caregiver, husband, or daughter to assist the wife as
easily as possible. A caregiver is required to help with many of life’s
necessities, however, the woman can do many things herself: therefore it
was important to design the lavatory area for her ease of use. As her
left side is stronger than her right, a faucet with a lever control on
the left was chosen. The homeowners were very pleased with the look,
feel, durability and functionality of their new bathroom. Visually the
space is appealing to the eye, matches the home’s existing aesthetics,
and adds significantly to its resale value.
