The clients wished to
build a deck, which would provide a smooth transition from a high
kitchen/dining area down to their backyard and pool, some eight feet
below. Due to the client’s requirements and the many angles of the home,
it was determined that a curved front would take the eye away from the
confusion and provide something clean and easy to look at instead.
Curving the Douglas Fir around a decreasing radius was a challenge
solved by ripping the 1X4 in half and making some custom lever arms to
lever the wood in place. Curving the rails for the curved stair was done
by re-sawing solid stock into 3/16" strips and gluing up with epoxy.
