The clients
had already faithfully restored their 18th century main house
and now wanted to add some fun to the property. They were looking for a
new outbuilding that would provide them with plenty of space for
exercise and relaxation. An important consideration was that the
structure fit the historic nature of their property. They chose to build
a new timber-framed barn on the site of their old barn…only this one was
made for kids and sleepovers, instead of hay and horses. The result is a
building that, on the exterior, is based on the “barn” vocabulary found
throughout the region. The building fits seamlessly on the site. On the
interior, the main volume is comprised of an athletic court with a loft
viewing area. The “porch” section contains a rich and inviting Great
Room. Folding glass walls (NanaWall) on both sides allow this room to be
almost completely open to the outside.
