This accessible bathroom
was explored from the perspective of design, occupational therapy,
construction, current and future use, and real estate value. While
accessibility was the goal, the family wanted to avoid an
institutional-looking environment often found in public bathroom
facilities. The design enabled the maximum level of dignity and
independence by integrating access, safety, ease of maintenance and
beauty. The bathroom is also comfortable for other family members,
further expanding the intent of “universal design”. The result is a
bathroom that is safe, functional, and most importantly,
beautiful…alleviating all fears, and restoring independence and dignity.
