The goal of this project
was to add space on three levels as well as to “renovate” the backyard.
One of the most important design goals was to create rooms that had a
“small” feel to them, giving the home a cozier look. This was done by
trying to keep the new spaces to the scale of the original home, and
despite the expansion from 3,717 SF to 9,178 SF, the house did not want
to feel “huge”. The project goals were met with great success. The
Basement Level is used as it was intended, for the children to spend
time with friends, playing video games, listening to music, or just
hanging out. The Main Level has moved the center of activity into the
new spaces in the back section of the home. The new Kitchen, Family
Room, Breakfast Area and Study have become the heart of the home,
including entertaining large groups comfortably. The Second Level saw
the addition of a large Master Bedroom Suite with a Sitting Room that
doubles as a mini-Family Room, a large Laundry Room, two mini-master
suites, and an Art Room where the family does crafts and creates
artwork. Finally, the exterior added a screened Porch in the back with
a wood burning fireplace, a large flagstone Patio with a sitting wall
and built in grill, a Potting Shed and new landscaping.
