The original home was
built and owned by Sir Harry Downie, master craftsman responsible for
the 50-year restoration of the Carmel Mission. The clients wanted to
hold on to the historic style of the architecture while updating it to
accommodate two cooks and entertaining. Custom concrete counter tops
increased the work prep areas and cabinets were designed to conceal the
microwave and dishwasher. The color and design of original tiles around
the fireplace were reproduced for the kitchen by an artisan, using
“Cuerda Seca”, an 8th century Spanish tile painting techniques, and
Spanish tile was installed on the floor in traditional mission pattern.
