Years of renovation and
additions turned this 1853 Cambridge row house into an unwieldy two
family structure. The clients wanted to turn the dwelling back into a
one family, kid-friendly space, while restoring its 19th century charm.
To create a new master bath, the contractor took existing bedroom space
and turned it into a gorgeous, period-appropriate master bath with a
large glassed-in shower and separate toilet closet. Because the home is
a row house with windows on only one side, finding innovative ways to
provide more natural lighting was a necessity. The problem was solved by
adding clerestory windows and frosted glass doors so that even in the
windowless master bath there is natural light. Large closets were added
to both bedrooms providing ample storage for the family, as well as
several cubbies in the walls between the bath and hallway, which can be
accessed on both sides of the wall. Historic integrity was returned to
this classic row house while seamlessly introducing modern amenities,
natural light, and a welcoming and functional floor plan.
