The homeowners desired a
solution to their rather awkward daily entry, which landed them directly
into their study. They also wanted a family gathering space to enjoy
their grandchildren and to reconnect to their back yard, and to replace
their small car shed with an attached two-car garage. Affectionately
dubbed “The Addition That Wasn’t”, the design solution strove to be a
respectful, sensitive and scale appropriate addition. The existing car
shed provided the core design theme of a street-facing gable with the
new forms to fall in line behind. The original home’s exterior materials
were used to establish a two tier hierarchy and matching masonry was
featured on the primary entry. The new two-car garage, family room and
entry were added transparently without taking away from the original
house, almost disguised behind the new repeated form of the original
garage shed.
