This project involved the
creation of a large and free flowing space by joining the breakfast room
with the kitchen. The home was built in the 1920’s, and in 1946 a screen
porch was added. Later the porch was enclosed to expand the kitchen
area, but the slanted porch ceiling created an unusual look, which the
owners wanted to correct. Removing the partition between the kitchen and
breakfast area created a much larger and open room. To eliminate the
slanted ceiling, support posts were placed on each end. Engineered flush
beams under the sheetrock now support the second floor without the
dividing wall. Raising the old porch roof required that the windows
directly above on the second story be shortened. The old kitchen overlay
cabinets were replaced with new premium grade custom cabinets. The
kitchen gained drawers and additional pantry cabinets. The owner
selected an extra deep kitchen sink and corresponding cabinetry at sink
area was designed. Hardwood flooring was stained and finished to match
the rest of the first floor.
