Charred ruins are "Home"
again
This 1,300 square foot house suffered severe damage due to a fire in a
window air conditioner. The origination room was gutted, the roof
partially destroyed, and the entire house was heavily smoke and soot
damaged.
City inspectors became involved because of outdated codes on all major
and minor items. Also, a poorly constructed addition with a flat roof
had caused severe drainage problems and rotted exterior wood that was
not covered by the insurance policy.
To solve the drainage problem, the roof line of the addition was changed
to a peak. Also to give better storage options inside, cabinets were
added in the kitchen. The Bathroom was redesigned to add a linen closet.
All codes were in compliance, and the home was increased in value by
150%. Best of all, through creative design, all work was done within the
budget allowed under the insurance policy.
The result was that an elderly woman was able to move back into a house
that was not only restored, but now much safer.
