Using the main house s a
backdrop, the new porch was shaped in both plan and volume to open up to
the rear yard’s many enjoyable vistas, capturing the vertical wedge of
light, air, and greenery anchored by their rear yard while still giving
a sense of shelter to its occupants and a harmonious and functional
attachment to the house. The new porch rises up in varying elevations to
capture a changing array of clouds, treetops, pond and patio.
Constructed in pole barn like detail, with hidden pier footings and a
pressure treated floor system floating over a level gravel base, the
sheltered area is an approximately 300 square foot semi-circle connected
to the main house by way of an existing covered rear doorway. Two
well-located custom screen doors allow good circulation through the new
porch and around the house and surrounding garden areas.
