For a
couple at retirement age who love to entertain their colleagues and
family, the kitchen in their historical home was lacking in
functionality and space. Over 90 years old, their home is in the
Kensington District of San Diego, surrounded by other historic homes
with a Spanish design influence. The couple wanted to significantly
transform their kitchen while honoring the character of their home.
The new
design starts with a bold black hood above a large white peninsula as a
focal point. The black and white theme is repeated throughout the room,
particularly in the concrete backsplash. Typical for an older home, this
area was separated into three rooms with walls and doors. The kitchen is
now open to the dining room and family room after the removal of two
walls. Natural light and circulation now infuse the area with a bright
sense of energy. The classic design blends hints of European charm with
a modern sensibility and retains its sense of place in historic
surroundings.
The
clients are thrilled with their new open space, which easily welcomes
gatherings large and small into an area designed with bold elements and
subtle details for a truly uncommon experience.
