The Owners wanted a large
Kitchen for family and entertaining. However, a large addition would not
respect the context of the existing house. Responding to this concern,
it was decided to increase the volume of the addition while limiting its
footprint. The volume of space was increased by using tall walls and a
vaulted ceiling. Lighting and ganged windows are also used to
accentuate the spaciousness of the room.
The new Kitchen is a dramatic improvement over the tiny, 67 sf Kitchen
that was originally constructed in this post-war starter home. That
small Kitchen could barely accommodate a single cook and it was
objectionable in its function and design. Additionally, it was
unappealing to a young family that wanted space for everyone - family,
friends, neighborhood kids, and dogs - to congregate in their Kitchen.
The new Kitchen and Family Room can handle a crowd while also providing
an appealing space to entertain or relax.
