Due to the age of this
home, built in 1910, several critical challenges were addressed during
the initial planning and preconstruction phases. The floor and walls
were constructed of brittle 12” thick fired clay tile masonry, requiring
constant stabilization and repair to maintain their integrity. Existing
brick was carefully salvaged, cleaned and reused to create the new brick
wall housing the appliances. All architectural moldings were custom
milled and painted to match the existing home. Original doors and trim
were saved and reinstalled where possible. The sink island cabinetry was
pushed into the family room to accommodate a larger main island and
wider traffic lanes for improved movement. Stainless steel shelves
spanning between the sink island end walls, maintain the open design and
establish a visual link and interaction between the kitchen and family
room. The work areas were maximized with the large islands and full
height/full depth cabinets. Oversized refrigeration, multi-function
ovens, warming drawer and downdraft cook top meet the demands of the
family for any occasion. Uniquely fabricated horizontal white oak,
stainless steel and painted cabinetry combined with marble counter tops
and ebonized oak flooring, complement the contemporary design elements
used throughout the home.
