This 85 year old home was
severely damaged by a fire that started in the basement. The fire burned
through the floor joist and center support beam under the kitchen and
dining room. In restoring and improving the home, one of the biggest
challenges was bringing it up to existing codes. The homeowner
originally had 6 1/2 foot ceilings in the basement and wanted 8 foot
ceilings. To do this they broke out the existing concrete floor and dung
out the dirt to increase the height. The supported the dwelling, removed
existing brick support columns and poured 5’ X 5’ X 18” pads and
installed steel columns with a center support beam. Before pouring the
new floor, tubing was installed in the slab for hot water heat in the
floor. All cabinetry was fabricated in their own cabinet shop using
solid cherry.
