This
tiny 80 sq. ft. kitchen in a small one bedroom condo was last updated in
the 1980’s when the building was converted to condominiums. The cheap
base grade cabinets and appliances provided the bare minimum storage and
functionality, but didn’t suit the personality of the owner. The owner
wanted to update the aesthetics of the space and add storage space, but
also wanted an informal dining area to replace the dining table that was
taking up too much space in the small living area. The owner travelled
extensively and had no need to cook large meals. The new design also
needed to enhance the warmth that new hardwood flooring provided and
retain the whimsical farmhouse look of the existing lighting fixture. To
accomplish this, warm maple cabinets, muted green granite and bead board
paneling were use to reflect the owner’s style. The peninsula was
extended to add more cabinets and roll out shelves to the base cabinets.
The bulky stove and microwave were replaced with smaller units to allow
wider cabinets. The door swing into the bedroom was reversed to allow
the enlarged peninsula and create the breakfast bar. Under counter
lighting was added as well as a faux French door to reflect light from
the opposite windows.
