It is
said that out of adversity comes opportunity. That phrase certainly
applies to this project. A fire was started when a lightweight charcoal
grill was blown over onto the deck by a gust of wind. The redwood deck
was ignited and a large part of the wood frame house was consumed. The
priorities and changes that the homeowners desired to be incorporated
into the project included:
* A
covered entry door and large landing.
* An oversized single car garage with stair access to the house.
* A more private deck with fire-proof decking boards.
* Design for a circular flow through the main two rooms of the house.
* Re-design the kitchen for more workable counter space with task
lighting.
Overall, the house is not
to appear that it has been repaired or remodeled. It has continuing roof
lines that tie together, materials that blend together with finishes and
contrasting trim colors. All planning, building and fire codes were met
or surpassed in this project. All the owner’s priorities were met or
exceeded and they are very satisfied with the results.
