The owners of this
mid-century modern residence expressed a desire to add a master bedroom
and bathroom suite to their home. The existing 1,938 square foot
structure was designed and built in 1954. The owners were clear they
wanted the addition to match, or complement, the spirit of the existing
home. Because of the clean, sleek and minimalist design characteristic
of the mid-century modern, it was important that the addition not be an
over-sized wart on the side of the house. At first blush this appears to
be a small house with a small addition, but it proved to be a big
project with a big finish. The home was increased to 2,645. The owners
have reclaimed their dining and formal living spaces and a dramatic
gallery passage and secluded luxurious master suite now embrace their
tranquil courtyard rainforest.
