The design concept emerged from the realities of the
beam and columns that marched through the space; a design with a grid of
6 modules, each 12' X 12', and each assigned a function.
1. Media
2. Card & Games
3. Library
4. Pool Table
5. Work-Out
6. Wet Bar
Each module is visually reinforced by coffered ceiling treatment with
cove lighting, and defined by tapered columns. Defined places for people
to relax in the basement are a positive result. Built-in cabinets,
furniture, carpets, large-scale floor tile and media equipment were
selected to reinforce the planning modules. A 12' section of custom
cabinetry with floating glass top separates the media center from the
pool table, acting as a sofa table and providing storage. What was an
unused basement has become a daily hang-out place for the family.
