This gorgeous bath suite
was formerly a 2 1/2 car garage. Once the garage was gutted, they now
had to work with a concrete floor, which was lower than the house
elevation. Because the space was so narrow, the tub deck looked too
massive sitting above the floor elevation. Since the owner wanted the
tub to sit low, they cut into the concrete to sink the plumbing below
the tub. Floor joists were installed and insulated to meet the existing
house elevations, but the tub actually sits on the old garage floor. To
deal with the narrowness of the area, sleek, simple lines were used to
disguise it. The owner’s desire for natural lighting, coupled with a
need for privacy, was achieved by installing a bank of opaque windows
along the tub and shower. A novel use of bamboo flooring applied to the
walls lends naturalness to the room. The homeowner had a definite vision
for this bath, and contributed his own research and ideas to the
collaboration. The result is a luxurious contemporary bath that
fulfilled his vision.
