In many large
metropolitan areas, growing families are faced with the decision to
relocate to a larger home in the outreaches of the suburbs and endure a
longer commute and larger mortgage, or to stay in the home they are
outgrowing. This client decided to convert their existing 1950's era
brick rambler into a 2 1/2 story, 5 bedroom home with large, open living
spaces. Priority was given to functional rather than formal spaces and
the design was intended to complement the neighborhood rather than
dominate it. This was accomplished by adding a new 2nd floor and a rear
addition to the existing home, while reconfiguring the original 1st
floor and basement. The entire exterior of the home was updated in a
combination of Colonial and Craftsman themes.
