The clients wanted to explore the option of
creating an Accessory Dwelling Unit (ADU) in the backyard of their 1906
Victorian, for her ailing parents. There was already an original
carriage house to which had been added a garage in the 70’s.
With much reframing, insulating, and mechanical work, the Accessible
Accessory Dwelling Unit (AADU?) now serves as a small home for the
grandparents, just steps away from the main house. It is filled with
daylight and ample lighting at night, and opens out to a patio shared by
grandparents, parents, and grandchildren. And their dog.
