Renovating the front elevation was part of a whole house renovation/addition. Approval for the larger renovation was contingent upon returning the front elevation to its original historic design after various alterations over many years. Traditional New Orleans front porches were important, promoting social engagement with neighbors while protecting front doors and windows from hard rain/heat. The design of columns and trim was typically simple, with tongue-and-groove wood decking as well as tongue-and groove-ceilings, often painted blue to ward off spirits or mosquitoes, depending on your belief. Historic photos were referenced to ensure this porch design honored the original. |
