The main challenge in this project was to expand and reconfigure the second floor living space of the house, while preserving the charm of a cape cod and maintaining a scale similar to others in the neighborhood. A secondary challenge was that no expansion could occur beyond the front wall plane or above the existing roof ridge. The small hip accents on both gable ends were removed and a “salt box” style reverse gable was added over the front door. This improved the roof lines and curb appeal. The additional space gained, along with a second floor dormer, was extensive, but the new construction does not exceed the height of the existing structure. This helped to maintain the scale of the home and meet the height requirements. The project utilized elements found in many cape cods, including accents of shake siding mixed with lap siding, a bold strong color, and the appearance of a one story structure.
