To expand this kitchen, it was opened up to the porch. As a result a built-in bench and table were added for the dining area and an island was added to the room's cooking area. The island and opposite wall are now a parallel work area for food prep, dish washing and cooking. As the floor plan on the next page shows, one wall now houses the refrigerator, a hidden stackable washer and dryer, and a small work area. As a result of the new open floor plan and numerous windows, daylight now shines through the kitchen. To maintain the character of the house, the area under the existing windows was built out to house 8-10Ó deep cabinets concealed as a wainscot that ties into the aforementioned bench seat. The millwork was painted to match the trim and the front of the island. The new cabinets have a dark chocolate finish on walnut that blends with the home's furnishings for a more cohesive appearance.
