Maintaining it’s presence in downtown Nashville was critical for the
YMCA. The outmoded, virtually windowless, 1970’s building was
ill-equipped to meet their present day needs. The façade of the addition
was designed to blend the old and new structures and to establish a
unique identity for the Downtown YMCA. Evaluation of the building
program revealed that much of the existing facility-the pool, basketball
court, handball/racquetball courts, men’s locker room-could be
refurbished, allowing the design to focus on the critical program
objectives such as, a stat of the art Wellness Center, expanded locker
rooms, increased group exercise spaces, and doubling the amount of
parking.
