The requirements were to
turn a cold den into an attractive, useable space without enlarging the
room. The room was originally a slate patio space which had been poorly
closed in. The frame structure was extremely poor, and an obvious crawl
space access panel marred the one large wall space. To begin, the three
outside walls were removed, keeping only the fireplace and half stairway
leading to the kitchen. This wall was opened completely and an
attractive rail added making the den an extension of the sunny kitchen.
Windows were replaced with larger, efficient ones designed to match
others in the home. The access panel was eliminated and oak paneled
walls and trim were treated with a medium tone stain. The fireplace was
saved and surrounded with custom built-ins. This is now an inviting,
cozy room with easy access to the kitchen and a lovely view of the rear
patio and yard.
