This kitchen in a
historic 1917 house had been poorly renovated in the 1970's, and the
client wanted an updated look, more efficient use of space and a true
"cooks" kitchen. Two window openings that had been blocked in the
previous renovation were resurrected to restore the original integrity
and allow more natural light into the kitchen. Custom fabricated
quarter-sawn oak cabinets are skillfully incorporated with painted
cabinets to resemble original built-in furniture pieces. A counter level
cabinet houses small appliances that remain on the ready. Uneven floor
joists required that the entire floor system be reframed and leveled.
Existing windows in the breakfast room were uneven due to the sloped
floor, and rather than incurring the expense of replacing the windows,
the built-in bookshelf below was skillfully angles to create the
illusion of a level condition. This functional and elegant kitchen has
come full circle as a result of this renovation.
