2006 Best Kitchen Remodel Under
$40,000
The existing home was
built in 1929 and the kitchen had been remodeled in the early 70's. The
goal of this project was to correct all the past design deficiencies.
The existing kitchen was completely gutted including existing wiring.
The new kitchen also called for the removal of an existing load bearing
wall, which was accomplished by using four glue-lam joists sandwiched
together and fastened with carriage bolts. The new beam was set up
against the floor joist for the second floor. Metal posts were set in
the walls of the kitchen and basement to carry this load. Red oak
flooring was installed and light cherry cabinets were selected to
balance the warmth of the existing home, yet feel updated at the same
time. A new set of French doors were added between the new kitchen and
existing dining room.
