Our clients wanted some kind of focal point in
the living area to display their quirky art pieces. They wanted that focal point to be seen from all of the adjacent spaces. But the living/fireplace area felt disconnected from the rest of the house and the river. Its partially vaulted ceilings were too low to create any sense of drama and there was nothing to distinguish it from the dining area.

Solutions:

• Removed central structural wall and replaced it with a colonnade, allowing views to the fireplace/display from all adjacent spaces

• Modified existing roof trusses to provide more dramatic, fully vaulted ceilings

• Added 45 linear feet of glass to the living/dining space to bring the outdoors in

• Added cross vault in living area to increase drama and distinguish living area from dining area

• Centered fireplace on these two vaults to create a strong focal point

• Cabinets (both open and enclosed) are each lit to show their contents

• Provided consistently-detailed traditional millwork elements to tie the fireplace to the rest of the space
