The exterior element for this submission
is the timber framed parking pavilion. The Owners site was a steep ridge
with no level surfaces to park cars. The clients needed parking for 4
cars. They were concerned that the covered parking structure would
destroy the natural park-like setting and block the views through the
trees to the nearby lake. The Owners also wanted the parking areas to be
able to be used for family gatherings and reunions since the entire
property is located on the top of a steep ridge. The Owners wanted the
carport structure to use natural materials to compliment the main home
and yet create something that would feel like it could be in a national
park. The timber frame pavilions create a dramatic entrance feature for
the custom home. The timber frame is open and airy and yet anchored by a
strong natural stone base. The steep
pitched roofs match the steep pitch of
the hillside on each side of the pavilions. Each of the timber frames is
symmetrical by itself, symmetrical with the other pavilion and also
symmetrical on the custom home. By duplicating the timber framed
pavilion the architect created a balanced relationship between the two
structures.
