The clients saw the
potential of this worn out post and beam house on a dramatic steep site.
The home is on a steep hillside, so the front entrance is on the third
floor, with one level above and two below. The rear four stories are all
glass walls that have extraordinary views. The house suffered from major
traffic flow issues involving the foyer and main stair. By relocating
the stair to the end wall of the great room, the foyer was opened to the
view, and the stair became a design opportunity. A custom designed maple
and mahogany stair serves as a sculptural element on what was a blank
wall. A floor to ceiling glass panel was added at the bottom of the
stairs to take advantage of hidden views of the river. A spiral
staircase was added to the solarium to provide public circulation from
the living room above without needing to pass through the master bedroom
below.
