This is the complete
restoration of the 1876 Train Depot in Matthews, North Carolina. The
numerous occupants since the station’s decommission in 1958 managed to
remove or damage much of it’s original floor structure. After the
building was moved to a new foundation just yards from the original, it
was stripped of all interior and exterior components to reveal the
original timber frame structure. There were numerous timbers missing and
the door and window placements were not original. Many hours were spent
listening to stories and viewing old photographs to capture as much
original detail as possible. The project even included buying back
original signs and railroad equipment that had been removed (or stolen)
after the station was decommissioned. The town was committed and their
support was tremendous. The building now houses the Matthews Chamber of
Commerce and a Historical Museum of the town.
