This project included removal
of an old 7’ X 25’ single floor addition with crawl space and the
construction of a new 13’ X 25’ addition over the old addition’s
footprint. The new addition has a bull basement and a 2nd floor over
part of the footprint. During the design phase, the contractor presented
the case for green building, which the client ultimately embraced.
The summary of the green aspects of this project are:
Recycling of entire existing structure and 100% of jobsite waste.
Durable shell, using materials that will last 100 years or more. Roof
shingles will last 50 years.
Thermally efficient foundation, wall and roof systems.
Extensive use of local materials and sustainably grown materials.
Use of formaldehyde-free and low-VOC products along with a tight
envelope and variable speed air handler.
90% of the additional “green” measures were done for the original
contract price.
