Finding the original
floor plan too restrictive, the owner desired an open and comfortable
concept with views to the outside as well as an emphasis on capturing
natural light. The goal was to introduce a crafted design with layered
panoramic views into and through the interior spaces. The fundamental
component of the rectangle is expressed in many elements of the design.
To introduce more natural light into the kitchen, wall cabinets with
glass doors were placed in front of several new windows. After
relocating the laundry upstairs, the mudroom space was transformed into
a bright breakfast nook. This project proves that, with some
imagination, willingness to emphasize the natural beauty of exposed
wood, and allowing craftsmen to do their finest work, mass produced
residences can become a wonderful and unique place to call home.
