Built
in 1934, this project was a true affair of the heart for the owners who
were deeply committed to preserving and enhancing this truly historic
architectural gem. From the outset the goals of the project were clear;
seamlessly weave a 1,000 square foot addition into the architectural
fabric of this outstanding example of the French Eclectic style of
Charles Stevens Dilbeck. To do so, meant maintaining and enhancing the
scale, the proportion, the detail, and perhaps most importantly, the
engaging character of the home-both inside and out.
The completed project should read as if the home were originally
designed and constructed as finished. It was important to the owners, as
well as to the design and build team, that it become impossible to
determine where the original ended and the new began. Maintaining this
commitment to the original design required an extensive study of
existing details, creative sourcing of compatible materials, and the
economic fabrication of critical elements no longer available as stock
products.
