2012 Best Whole House Remodel - $500,000 - $1,000,000
The
initial designers of this home were two of the area’s premiere
residential architects between 1919 and 1939, and the new owners desired
to recapture the character of the original design while adding
considerably to the functional and stylistic appeal for a present-day
buyer.
While the home was completely gutted to make way for new mechanical,
electrical, plumbing, and a reconfiguration of space, the formal entry
hall, living room, dining room and two front secondary bedrooms remained
structurally intact and were incorporated into the finished project.
Utilizing copies of the original blueprints for the home, a bedroom was
removed from the second floor front façade, the entry court was
reopened, and the architectural detail of the front elevation was
recreated.
A hallmark of the project is the seamless transition from original to
newly constructed space. In the end, the homeowner had a well thought
out and functional floor plan in an historic old home, which had
reclaimed much of its lost charm. The added space provides the much
needed room for a large family with adequate privacy, practical flow,
and room scaling appropriate to the age of the home.
