This seaside home on
Naragansett Bay in Rhode Island was built in 1912. In 1996 it suffered a
serious fire and was abandoned to the elements until being purchased in
1999. The couple’s two passions are cooking and sailing, both being
former Olympic sailboat racers. They wanted "something of a yachty feel"
for their new kitchen, while maintaining it’s original character. New
windows were made with frame and sash details to match the unique 5 over
1 light cut found throughout the original house. New lighting fixtures
are replicas from the period. To add a touch of nautical ambiance, the
island is shaped with the gentle curve and rounded corners of a ship’s
pilot house and the oiled teak counter top is constructed using joinery
that would rival the deck of the finest yacht.
