2003 Best Deck/Porch
To accommodate the
construction of a large formal garden, the owners of this seaside
cottage moved their driveway and the children’s play area. This made a
relatively unused side door the primary family entrance. Traditional
concepts for an entrance porch were impractical due to the door’s
location. It was decided to build a colonnade and pergola to support
sloping opaque glass panels. The panels protect the mahogany porch deck
from the elements and allows sunlight into the rooms behind. The arbor
and trellis give visual privacy from the street as well as a comforting
sense of enclosure for the play area.
