Image of the Industry Award
The purpose of this award
is to record snapshots of those things that make this industry so
special, in the hopes that it will inspire others and remind them of
what is best in all of us. You won’t see it on the Call for Entries and
there is no format for it. In fact, the process of formatting it, or
placing judging criteria on it…would completely defeat the purpose. The
award is not presented every year, but only when the judges see
something in one of the entries that they believe should be brought
forward.
In John Price and his company, Artisan Construction & Design, the judges
found an incredible story about priorities that they felt would be of
value to everyone. While the entire narrative is too extensive to print
here, I would like to share some of John Price’s quotes from the entry.
“The difficulty in this type of narrative, is talking about
opportunities to serve in such a way as to draw attention to the service
and not only to the person.”
“My greatest pleasure has been to continue my role as husband to my
wonderful wife, with whom I celebrated thirty years of marriage last
September.”
“My biggest accomplishment is being a father to my three sons. I have
always seen my role with them not just to raise children, but to help
create future husbands, fathers and citizens.”
“This year, my city bestowed on me the Small Business of The Year
Award. During the presentation, they highlighted “the significant
contribution to the community, and the efforts to value my employees.”
John strongly believes that contributions to the industry are done by
both being involved with other companies through association
involvement, and by the improvement of one’s own company, which is then
shared with others.
“In our area, the closest NARI chapter is 60 miles away. I am a
member of the Chapter Board of Directors and currently serve as Vice
President. I am also on the National Board of Directors as our Chapter
Board Representative.”
In addition to all this, John is the Chairman of the Golden Valley Heath
Centers, a non-profit healthcare organization serving the poor, with a
large percentage being farm workers. He was the President of his local
Rotary Club, and founded the Educator of the Year Award in the city. He
is, and has been, the local high school’s water polo coach for the past
ten years. Last year he took eight young people to Tijuana, Mexico to
build small homes for desperately poor people. He is also involved in a
host of faith-based projects sponsored by his church, in which he is
extremely active..
John’s philosophy is to budget your giving by budgeting your time. He
places the highest priority on a company that invests time, rather than
just money, to help people. He represents a model that all companies,
both inside and outside the remodeling industry, should attempt to
emulate.
