Restoration
The fire damage
restoration of a historic home built in 1864, was particularly
challenging because the house was originally constructed with building
materials that, because of the scarcity of building materials during the
Civil War, were salvaged from a nearby destroyed troop barracks. The
original kitchen floor system, constructed of 4'X6' hand hewn heart pine
beams, was destroyed by the fire and required creative engineering and
design solutions so the replaced floor system would conform to current
building code requirements and maintain the original appearance of the
structure. The original kitchen had two-hundred-year-old delftware
ceramic wall tiles that were destroyed by the fire. Similar two hundred
year old tiles were located in Holland and included in the restored
kitchen design.
