In April of 2007, after
living in their home for 23 years, the family had just ordered new
kitchen cabinets. Two weeks later they experienced a catastrophic fire
that started in their garage, spread into the roof and throughout the
rest of their home. The insurance scope of work included replacement of
the damaged framing, roof structure and interior finishes. In addition,
the mechanical, electrical, and plumbing systems were replaced along
with the windows, cabinetry, appliances and fixtures. Insurance
restoration is a unique discipline, which is put into focus by the
comments of the contractor, who writes:
“Typically, when a family makes the decision to remodel their home, they
will spend months or years preparing themselves for the project by
gathering ideas, interviewing designers and remodelers, reviewing finish
choices, then happily moving forward with their project. One can only
imagine the amount of strength required for a family to persevere
through the sudden, unplanned reconstruction and remodeling process when
their home is suddenly devastated by fire.”
This is the kind of understanding that is required to guide a family
through this necessary, but not always pleasant, process.
