Moving is a large
undertaking for anyone, but when this religious history professor moves,
his personal library moves with him. The house he purchased had no
bookcases, and the only space available for his library was a downstairs
poolroom. Challenges included: Fitting 5,000 volumes into the space
available, including a “stand-up” desk like ancient scholars used, and
creating an intangible “feel” that would be conducive to the deep
reflection required for his research writing. Space was saved by
building the desk into the bookcase. Ash bookcases and a mixture of red
and white oak hardwood flooring, along with additional recessed lighting
created the necessary ambiance. The results are two separate but
entirely compatible living spaces, one for deep thought and research and
the other for relaxation and casual conversation.
