This whole-house
renovation involved an historic rehabilitation of a home built in 1910.
The legal requirements of restoring a home’s exterior in an historic
district of Washington, DC is always a challenge, but running wires,
ductwork and pipes while preserving original heart-pine floors and tin
ceilings presented additional challenges. The carriage house and
basement floors we4re excavated to increase the ceiling height. The
basement became a well-lit and spacious nanny suite and the new garage
received lighting and a period-style automatic garage door. The attic
was transformed into a new bedroom and bath with the HVAC equipment
placed under the roof rafters. Making the attic and basement into
useable space almost doubled the interior living space while the project
retains almost all of the original details and character of the historic
home.
